For this project, the client asked us to introduce the shortlisted writers for The Bruntwood Prize for Playwriting 2017, moving away from the traditional ‘talking heads’ style interview, to a more engaging, creative concept. This montage video showcases a selection of different shots which brought each script to life.

Creative Concept

Filming interview content for the November ceremony of The Bruntwood Prize for Playwriting was the culmination of a full year’s contract with Manchester Royal Exchange. Our initial brief in December 2016 was to shake things up and create content which would engage audiences in a new way. For the final section of the brief, we were asked to create three interview films for each of the 10 shortlisted playwrights; two for social media, and one which was used to introduce each playwright during the award ceremony itself.

Our pitch to the client for the these films suggested hosting interviews which imaginatively captured what each play was about; losing the typical Q&A style previously employed in favour of conversations around each script and the creative process behind them. To ensure continuity, we kept the interview set-up consistent across the four days and three different locations.

Considering this was a competition, we needed to ensure each script was fairly represented and that our creative concepts didn’t dictate or jeopardise the aesthetics of the potential final on-stage production. We came up with the idea to represent each film inside the same rich environment to give each narrative cut-away a high production value, and to emphasise that we were creating film content of a theatrical end product. We chose to set all the narrative cut-aways in a single hotel, where each room of the building would be used to create a small world for each script and give us the detailed atmosphere we wanted. Six days of filming in London and Manchester and over 16 hours of total footage capped off our biggest contract to date.
